Abstract: | The high rate of authoritarianism among Masters as demonstrated in previous research, combined with the fact that human factors are the most prevalent single cause of maritime casualties, raises the possibility of a cause-effect relationship in some cases. Evidence from an airline industry programme that resulted in a significant reduction in casualties when the authoritarian role of the Captain in the cockpit was diminished suggests that the maritime industry could similarly benefit from such a programme. |
