Manufacturer's leasing and selling strategies considering product durability

Monopoly manufacturer that produces“razor-blade”products will face the problem of time inconsistency when adopting the sales strategy,causing losses to the total profit,while the leasing strategy allows the manufacturer to control the secondary market to avoid this problem.This article considers the impact of the durability of durable products,studies the production decisions of the monopoly manufacturer under sales and leases,and analyzes the manufacturer’s choice of rental and sales strategies.The study shows that when the production cost is low,both sales and leasing strategies may be the optimal strategy,but as cost increases,the leasing strategy is the optimal choice,and the manufacturer has incentives to increase the product durability.Manufacturer’s choice of rental and sales strategies under different production decisions is affected by the durability of durable products,the production cost and the number of consumable parts used.
