Abstract:The expression of proliferation related antigens, which are proliferating cell nuclearantigen (PCNA), protein 53 (p53 ), Ki-67, epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), and oncogene C-erbB-2 were examined immunohistochemically in 29 cases of superficial squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus (SSCCE). The aim was to show bow these proliferation related antigens and oncogene would express in SSCCE and whether immunohistological assessment of the proliferative activity might show any correlation with established histological grade and the presence of lymph nodemetastasis in SSCCE. The results showed that SSCCE with positive staining of p53 would metastasizeto lymph nodes more frequently than that with negative staining (P<0. 05). The index of Ki-67 inSSCCE with lymph node metastasis and poorly differentiated might be higher than that without lymphnode metastasis and moderately and well differentiated SSCCE, but without statistical significance.PCNA and EGFR indices were unrelated to the histological grade as well as lymph node metastasis inSSCCE. C-erbB-2 expression could not be detected in SSCCE. Therefore, p53 expression was an indicator of prognostic significance.
