Longitudinal strength is an important index to measure the performance of ship design, which is directly affect the hull structure and the deadweight. By using the 209,000 DWT Newcastlemax bulk carrier as an example, this paper provides several methods such as adjusting the longitudinal division of the cargo hold, changing the use of lower stool and altering the volume of water ballast to improve the longitudinal strength. Through the analysis and the investigation, these methods can be used to optimize the hull structure and reduce the lightweight. After all it points out the optimization direction for the total longitudinal strength and provides reference for further study on the relevance subjects.
