Researching new molecular entities and developing new pharmaceuticals is becoming increasingly difficult and expensive. Although the pharmaceutical industry worldwide increased its expenditure on research and development by 36 per cent from 1999 to 2003, the number of launches of new molecular entities declined over the same period.
