A Study of Ship Collision Accident Causes at Sea-Analysis of Fatigue

Fatigue, one of human factors, is specially considered as a stimulus to maritime accidents. A large number of marine accidents can be traced to human efrors, usually caused by fatigue. The accident of Ship Exxon Valdez, the worst maritime environmental disaster in the 20th century was a typical example. The effects of fatigue are very serious on the safety of navigating ships, since crew's behavior and his judgment ability is greatly influenced by fatigue so as not to able to deal with complicated problems. Several cases are given to demonstrate the harmfulness of fatigue and bring this matter to managers' and crews' attentions. Also, some suggestions and measures of reducing fatigue of crews on board are presented.
