Acute Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy (AAION)—Report of 26 Cases

This paper presents and analyses 26 cases of AAION. Very few of such cases have been reported in the literature because this disease is often misdiagnosed due to its close resemblance to papillary edema or optic atrophy or Foster-Kennedy syndrome. The pathogenesis is an acute decrease in the perfusion pressure of the postciliary artery. The features of the disease are as follows: 1. The disease often occurs in middle-aged and old people. 2. Both eyes are usually involved, but not always simultaneously. 3. There is a sudden onset, serious disturbance of visual acuity, optic disc edema with white color, etc. 4. The prognosis is bad.
