甘肃是我国的资源大省，蕴藏着丰富的矿产资源，多年来以此支撑并带动着甘肃的经济发展，也以此形成了以有色和黑色冶金、石油加工和化学工业为支柱的现代化工业体系的产业布局；同时解决了众多人员的就业问题。但是资源是有限的，不可再生，要科学地开采和利用，避免掠夺式的开发，否则将使有限的资源陷于可持续发展的危机和环境恶化的窘境之中。
