Abstract:A band brake is often used as a braking device in an automatic transmission because it fits around the clutch drum and does not require additional space. Its friction characteristics vary depending on the oil film between the brake band and the drum. Less friction force occurs under lower pressure and greater lubrication. In this study, the relationship between friction performance and the number of grooves in a brake lining was investigated experimentally and analytically. It was found that a reduction in the friction area resulted in a higher brake lining surface temperature. This relationship is thought to affect the durability of friction materials.
