Despite improvements in road safety over the past several decades, accident rates remain high for young drivers. One accident countermeasure that is expected to improve the safety record of this group is graduated licensing. The philosophy behind this licensing system is that novice drivers, of whom the majority are young, should be restricted to relatively safe driving environments during the initial learning period. Graduated licensing was implemented in the Province of Ontario, Canada in 1994. The objective of this study is to estimate the potential benefits and costs for young drivers associated with two components of the Ontario graduated licensing package: the late-night driving curfew and the high-speed roadway restrictions. Based on accident and travel data for the year 1988, accident-involvement rates per kilometre driven were calculated for different driver groups for various combinations of time of day and roadway speed limit. These rates were then applied to the expected mobility profiles of young drivers affected by graduated licensing. The results of the study support the late-night curfew and suggest that this component of the licensing package should reduce total accident involvements for the affected group by up to 10 percent and fatal accident involvements by up to 24 percent, while reducing their total driving by only four percent. By contrast, the empirical evidence suggest that the high-speed roadway restrictions are likely to increase accident involvements, and thus it is strongly recommended that this component of Ontario's graduated licensing package be changed. 相似文献

This paper analyzes the activity choices of individuals and the links between socio-demographics, daily schedules and activity attributes using a new activity choice framework. Activities are first clustered into groups based on their salient attributes, such as duration, frequency, flexibility, planning times, and number of involved persons, rather than their functional types (work, leisure and household obligations), using a K-means cluster technique. This led to the creation of several new activity groups such as “long, temporally fixed, personally flexible activities”, “short and flexible activities”. These activity groups form the choice set for the mixed logit activity choice modeling structure developed for the leisure activities in the second part of the paper. The model results reveal the significant relationships between socio-demographics, temporal characteristics, and characteristics of the schedules on leisure activity choice. The results demonstrate how changing demographics and other activities in individuals’ schedules may affect the nature of the leisure activities and present the substitution and complimentary effects that these new activity groups have on one another. 相似文献

Should we abandon activity type analysis? Redefining activities by their salient attributes 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3

This paper poses a challenge and begins a search. The challenge is to reconsider the usefulness of traditional activity types (“work”, “shopping”, etc.) in the understanding and modelling of travel behaviour. The search is for the more salient attributes of activities that may serve to better explain complex travel behaviours—such as activity scheduling and tour formation. In particular, this paper focuses on explicit measures of the spatial, temporal and interpersonal flexibility of activities, along with several traditional attributes (frequency, duration, involved persons, travel time, and location). Data from a recent in-depth week-long activity scheduling survey was used to define and compare these attributes. Results show that considerable variability in the attributes between and within traditional activity groups is evident. This casts considerable uncertainty on assumptions that statically assign levels of spatial, temporal, and interpersonal flexibility to any given activity type. A Principal Components Analysis further revealed eight new distinct clusters of activities that share like attributes. The relative role of each attribute in each component is examined, and subjective interpretations emerged (e.g., “Long and frequent”, “Space and time flexible” “Social networking”). The implications of these results for future model development and research are discussed. Future research should continue to expand the search for salient attributes and link them more directly to decision processes. 相似文献

This paper examines the location choice associated with discretionary activities (in-home vs. out-of-home). These substitution
patterns are important in terms of travel demand as in-home activities do not necessitate travel while out-of-home activities
incur travel. Mixed logit models are estimated using an activity dataset (2003 CHASE data) to analyze the factors associated
with this choice at the individual activity-level. Results suggest that the attributes of an activity significantly contribute
to understanding the likelihood of engaging in out-of-home activities. Activity type interaction terms reveal the varying
influence that socio-demographics, activity attributes and travel have over four different activity types modeled. The results
reveal that the location choice (in-home vs. out-of-home) is sensitive to travel characteristics. As the travel time and cost
increases, an individual is less likely to engage in an activity out-of-home. Compared to passive and social activities, the
location of active activities is more sensitive to changes in travel attributes. 相似文献

Developments in activity scheduling process data have recently allowed for much improvement and validation of rule-based activity scheduling models. The use of actual scheduling process data allows for a potentially more realistic model in terms of how the travel episodes are actually derived. Since these types of models are simulations of the scheduling process, scheduling conflicts naturally arise in the creation of the final schedule. The handling of these scheduling conflicts is a critical component of all rule-based activity models. Many of these models rely on the concept of priority of the activities to resolve conflicts. However, recent research has shown that this is often not how conflicts are actually resolved. In order to more accurately model actual conflict resolution behavior, scheduling process data was used to estimate conflict resolution rules using decision trees. The use of a conflict resolution model allows the strategy chosen to depend on the attributes of the individual and the conflicting activities, rather than assuming a prior definition of precedence based on the activity types. The conflict resolution decision showed reasonable ability to predict the resolution strategy chosen in actual scheduling process survey data, and represents an important advance in developing a functional computational process model of activity scheduling. 相似文献

A unique set of activity scheduling data is utilized in this paper to provide much needed empirical analysis of the sequence
in which activities are planned in everyday life. This is used to assess the validity of the assumption that activities are
planned in accordance to a fixed hierarchy of activity types: mandatory activities first (work/school), followed by joint maintenance, joint discretionary, allocated maintenance, and
individual discretionary activities. Such an assumption is typical of current generation activity and tour-based travel demand
models. However, the empirical results clearly do not support such assumptions. For instance, fewer than 50% of mandatory
activities were actually planned first in related out-of-home tours; remaining activity types also did not take any particular
precedence in the planning sequence. Given this, a search was made for the more salient attributes of activities (beyond activity
type) that would better predict how they are planned within tours. Several ordered response choice models for different tour
sizes were developed for this purpose, predicting the choice order of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. planned activity in the tour
as a function of activity type, activity characteristics (duration, frequency, travel time, and involved persons), and individual
characteristics. Activity duration played the most significant role in the models compared to any other single variable, wherein
longer duration activities tended to be planned much earlier in tours. This strongly suggests that the amount of time-use,
rather than the nature of the event as indicated by activity type, is a primary driver of within-tour planning order and offers
potential for a much improved and valid fit. 相似文献

A computerized household activity scheduling survey 总被引:7,自引:6,他引:1
Household activity scheduling is widely regarded as the underlying mechanism through which people respond to emerging travel
demand management policies. Despite this, very little fundamental research has been conducted into the underlying scheduling
process to improve our understanding and ability forecast travel. The experimental survey approach presented in this paper
attempts to fill this gap. At the core of the survey is a Computerized Household Activity Scheduling (CHASE) software program.
The program is unique in that it runs for a week long period during which time all adult household members login daily to
record their scheduling decisions as they occur over time. An up-front interview is used to define a household's activity
agenda and mode availability. A sample of 41 households (66 adults and 14 children) was used to assess the performance of
the survey. Analysis focuses on times to completion, daily scheduling steps, activity-travel patterns, and scheduling time
horizons. Overall, the results show that the computer-based survey design was successful in gathering an array of information
on the underlying process, while minimizing the burden on respondents. The survey was also capable of tracing traditionally
observed activity-travel outcomes over a multi-day period with minimal fatigue effects. The paper concludes with a detailed
discussion on future survey design, including issues of instrument bias, use of the Internet, and improved tracing of spatial
behaviour. Future use of the survey methodology to enhance activity-travel diary surveys and stated responses experiments
is also discussed.

The notion of operating and maintenance manuals being validated as fit for purpose is based largely on conjecture, as causal factors contributing to rule-based (procedure-based) human error at sea are under-theorised and under-researched. Human factors theories offer little in terms of framework as to the constitution of a bad rule. In this study, an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) operating and maintenance manual was assessed against two rule-based error-provoking markers identified through literature review. The contribution of the original and subsequently modified OEM operating and maintenance manuals towards both behaviour modification and rule-based error was assessed through a workshop-based study. Randomly selected seafaring participants were tasked with the responsibility of executing a typical shipboard operational procedure by referring to an original or modified version of the manual. The study supported the following hypotheses: (1) the hierarchical access structure of headings in an operating and maintenance manual supports the primary function of selection, and (2) the efficacy of inference in a procedure-based task is dependent upon the spatial contiguity of corresponding text and illustrations in an operating and maintenance manual. The findings of this study suggest that a nexus exists between the structure of operating and maintenance manuals, behaviour modification and human error. Furthermore, this study demonstrates a need for further research into specific causal factors contributing towards rule-based error in shipboard operating and maintenance tasks. 相似文献

Activity scheduling simulation models represent an emerging and proposing approach to forecasting travel demand. The most
significant developmental challenge is the lack of empirical data on how people actually proceed through the scheduling and
conflict resolution process. This paper develops a new methodology to collect data about the rescheduling decision process.
The data collection involves six stages: preplanned schedule interview, coding of the preplanned schedule, second-by-second
Global Positioning System tracking, internet-based prompted recall diary, detection of rescheduling decisions (via comparison
of planned versus executed activities), and a final in-depth interview probing the how and why of rescheduling decisions.
Each stage of the methodology is described in detail with example results drawn from a pilot study. Key discoveries include:
elicitation of multiple preplanned schedule reporting methods (verbal, point-form, calendar); discovery that activity attributes
(time, location, involved persons) are planned on significantly different time horizons and include partial elaboration; and
provision of new insights into how and why rescheduling decisions are made. A method for automatically tracking rescheduling
decisions was also discovered. Overall, the new methodology has potential to contribute to the development of more realistic
models of the entire scheduling process, especially rescheduling and conflict resolution sub-models. 相似文献
