This paper examines what is becoming the new order of maritime shipping, the transnational corporation. By combining the flags of convenience with crews of convenience, these corporations have become entiitcs with an existence above and beyond the nation-state in which they operate. Shipping companies’ crucial need for cost cutting is their main motive for recruiting seafarers of various nationalities and formulating multicultural teams on board ships. This paper seeks to examine ways of dealing with cultural issues by being a socially responsible company. The main point of the research is to examine how managing multicultural crews is related to the shipping companies’ and the industry’s social responsibility. An extensive literature review on the cultural issues of maritime manpower, with a focus on the working and living conditions and the management of shipping crews, reveals important aspects of the subject. This analysis is enriched with qualitative data from an on-board case study, and from a survey among crew managers and manning agents. Results show that managing multicultural human resources in a socially responsible manner requires socially acceptable behaviour towards seagoing labour from all the industrial actors.  相似文献

This paper investigates whether Somali piracy is a random phenomenon. The investigation takes place in two distinct parts. Its statistical analysis spans over a period of 11 years, from 2000 until 2011 for the first part (flags), and 5 years, from 2007 until 2011 for the second one (crews). The reason is that although prior to 2007 there have been a substantial number of attacks (parameter used in the first part of the research), very few ships were practically pirated (parameter used in the second part) within the same period. Firstly, it is widely believed that Somali pirates select their targets at random and the decision on attacking a vessel registered under a particular flag is unrelated to the participation of the flag state in any of the naval forces operating around the Horn of Africa. The enquiry attempts to assess whether these two common beliefs are supported by historical data and to what extent. Secondly, this paper asks whether there are certain nationalities of crews which are for ethnic and/or cultural reasons more (or less) vulnerable to fall victims of pirates off Somalia. Such groups (if there are any) would in effect indirectly ‘support’ Somali piracy, and for this reason, they could be considered as ‘passively supportive crews’. The analysis focuses on the crew composition of the attacked vessels with special interest cast upon those ships (meaning the crews) which eventually succumbed to Somali pirates and were in the end seajacked.  相似文献

In this article, it is claimed that research on cross-cultural crews is dominated by one specific understanding of the concept of culture, which is static, evenly distributed and context-independent. Such a conception of culture may bring some basic order while facing an unknown culture, but it may also have unintentional outcomes. It may lead to a deterministic view of other cultures, thereby reinforcing prejudices and underestimating other forms of differences; it risks blinding the participants of the specific context of a given communicative situation. The article opens with a critical review of the theory of Geert Hofstede, the most renowned representative of this theoretical approach. The practical consequences of using such a concept of culture is then analysed by means of a critical review of an article applying Hofstede to cross-cultural crews in seafaring. Finally, alternative views on culture are presented. The aim of the article is, rather than to promote any specific theory, to reflect about diverse perspectives of cultural sense-making in crosscultural encounters.  相似文献

针对常规技术方案下高桩码头建设标准化程度低、现场混凝土浇筑工作量大、船机配备多、人员安全风险高等问题,本文结合连云港港徐圩港区多个码头工程的设计及建设情况,研究装配式桩帽、装配式横梁及模块化装配式技术在高桩码头结构建设过程的应用技术及应用效果,结果表明:码头工程装配式技术方案应结合工程区自然条件、泊位使用要求、主体结构尺度、施工能力等综合确定,并辅以必要的节点连接创新措施。装配式技术在徐圩港区的应用可为类似工程提供参考借鉴。  相似文献

实船训练系统是嵌入舰船系统内的舰员训练模拟系统,具有实施容易,效率高和费用低的特点,能帮助舰员迅速获得必要的操作技能和知识。实船模拟训练,将成为未来海军训练的发展方向。现从国内外实船训练系统研究现状出发,分析了实船训练系统在舰员培训中的优势,提出了一种在主推进装置监控系统中嵌入实船训练的方案,使主推进系统带有模拟训练的功能。在海上停航或者在港内停泊期间,舰船主推进系统可以从航行模式切换到实船训练模式,舰员在平时工作环境中,学习主推进系统的各项操作和故障处理,使训练好像在航行中实际操作一样。舰船准备起航时,主推进系统能够迅速从训练模式切换到航行模式,执行原机舱监控系统的功能。实船训练系统不影响舰船航行中的操作功能,也不会降低原机舱监控系统的性能。  相似文献

ABSTRACT

How vessel crews perceive safety on board (shipboard safety) is a useful indication for the general safety level. In this study a theoretical model was explored, involving factors that could possibly influence shipboard safety. Based on a survey questionnaire (n = 244), safety climate, shipowner efficiency demands and regulatory activities were investigated as influencing factors. Structural equation modelling gave support to the theoretical model and the findings illustrate that simultaneous involvement of various levels of the maritime system (crews, shipowners, regulators) can be effective for safety improvements. The study indicates that shipboard safety is affected by actions and prioritization by external actors through safety climate. It suggests that the maritime industry will profit from monitoring safety climate as part of the ongoing risk considerations, as a supplement to reactive parameters such as accident statistics.  相似文献
